Fishermen of Karaikal in Puducherry, India, have decided to boycott the Assembly elections in protest over several issues, including the failure by the Indian Government to free Indian fishermen in Sri Lankan custody.
The Hindu newspaper reported that at a meeting held at Karaikalmedu, Karaikal fishermen decided to boycott the polls in support of their demands.
They wanted the fishermen to be included in the list of most backward community by the Union Territory of Puducherry. They wanted immediate intervention by the Central and State government for the release of fishermen arrested by the Sri Lankan naval personnel. Fishermen representatives from 11 hamlets in and around Karaikalmedu participated in the meeting. (Colombo Gazette)
