The police headquarters today warned the public to be on the alert of fake policemen who are attempting to extort money from people.
The police said that there have been complaints of people telephoning the public and demanding money.
According to the police, the men who telephone the public claim they are from the police and are conducting investigations into LTTE links with the public.
The caller, at times, claims that there is information that the person answering the call had links with the LTTE.
The caller then demands money in order to avoid arresting that person, the police headquarters said.
Some people, out of fear, fail to report the telephone call to the police and pay the money demanded by the caller.
The police urged the public not to fall prey to such bogus telephone calls and to report the matter to the police. (Colombo Gazette)??
