03 Feb, 2016

A mother of a convict in the murder of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi has sought the release of her son.

Speaking to reporters in Kilinochchi, Vetrivel Somini, the mother of Murugan, said that she has launched a campaign to collect over 1 million signatures in Sri Lanka to gather support to secure the release of her son.

Somini said that she hopes to collect the signatures and submit the petition to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The mother of the convict said that her son and 6 others have been in prison for 25 years and she will appeal on behalf of all the convicts seeking their release.

She said that she will also look to submit the petition to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu J. Jayalalithaa.

Somini said that in other countries world leaders have pardoned convicts accused of grave crimes so she expects her son to also receive clemency. (Colombo Gazette)
