Opposition slams Ranil over judiciary

The opposition today accused?Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe?of degrading the judiciary by questioning the order given on former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa.

Opposition leader and Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) member Nimal Siripala de Silva said that while President Maithripala Sirisena had accepted the ruling, the Prime Minister was attempting to challenge it.

A two member bench of the Supreme Court had ordered the police not to arrest the?former Defence Secretary until a case filed by him is heard.

Rajapaksa had filed a petition in court against the police Financial Crimes Investigations Division (FCID).

Wickremesinghe said that he will go to the Commonwealth to challenge the court order preventing the arrest of Rajapaksa.

The opposition says the Prime Minister had misled the public through the reasons he had given on why he will challenge the court order. (Colombo Gazette)

Term of commission investigating SriLankan, Mihin extended

The term of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry probing allegations of large scale fraud and malpractices at SriLankan Airlines, SriLankan Catering Ltd and Mihin Lanka has been extended until 30th of June. A special gazette notification to extend the term of the commission was issued by President Maithripala Sirisena. The commission was appointed to investigate alleged irregularities in connection with SriLankan Airlines Limited, SriLankan Catering Limited and Mihin Lanka (Private) Limited

Professor Sarath Wijesuriya ordered to appear in court

Professor Sarath Wijesuriya has been ordered to appear in court next month to face Contempt of Court charges. The Court of Appeal issued notice on Wijesuriya to appear in court on the 21st of June. Wijesuriya, who is from the National Movement for Social Justice, has been accused of making comments critical of the judiciary.
