Martin Wickramasinghe’s novel Madol Doova was introduced to a group of Swedish schoolchildren during a programme organised by the Sri Lankan Embassy in Stockholm.

The programme used a Swedish translation of the novel to introduce students to its story, characters and depictions of Sri Lankan culture and traditions. Translator Priyanwada M. Banduwardana read a chapter in Swedish before joining an interactive discussion with the children.

Students asked questions about the novel, Sri Lanka and the cultural references found in the story. The embassy also used the session to present aspects of the country beyond the text, giving participants a broader introduction to Sri Lankan life and heritage.

First published in Sinhala, Madol Doova follows the adventures of two boys and is among Wickramasinghe’s best-known works. Translations have helped introduce the novel to readers outside Sri Lanka.

The Stockholm event allowed young readers to encounter the story in their own language while discussing the society and landscape in which it is set. It also highlighted the role of literary translation in bringing Sri Lankan writing to new audiences.

The embassy described the activity as part of its cultural outreach in Sweden. The programme combined literature, discussion and cultural education, while giving participating pupils an opportunity to speak directly with the translator.
