Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath to lead Sri Lanka delegation to 81st Session of the UN General Assembly

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, Vijitha Herath will lead the Sri Lanka delegation to the 81^st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) from 27 to 30 September 2026.

Foreign Minister Herath is scheduled to deliver Sri Lanka’s National Statement at the General Debate during the High Level Week on 28 September 2026 aligning with this year’s UNGA theme ‘Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.’

On the margins of the General Assembly, the Foreign Minister will have meetings with the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, senior officials of the UN, and Foreign Ministers of several countries.

A Sri Lankan national living in a refugee camp in Tiruchi has been arrested for trying to cross over to Sri Lanka illegally. Sirisena?s former Chief of Staff and former STC Chairman granted bail

President Maithripala Sirisena?s former Chief of Staff K Mahanama and former State Timber Corporation (STC) Chairman P. Dissanayaka were granted bail today. Mahanama and Dissanayaka were in remand after being arrested for accepting a bribe of Rs.20 million over a land deal. Mahanama and the Chairman of the State Timber Corporation, P. Dissanayake were arrested at the car park of a Colombo hotel while accepting the bribe from an Indian businessman.?(Colombo Gazette)

Fonseka questioned by CID over Noyahr’s abduction and assault

Former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka was questioned by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) today over the abduction and assault on journalist Keith Noyahr in 2008. Fonseka was questioned for four hours at the CID office in Colombo. The CID has already recorded statements on the incident from former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
