Lions Continue to Drive Nationwide Rebuilding After Ditwah Floods

Lions International Multiple District 306 continues to lead rebuilding efforts across Sri Lanka following the Ditwah floods, supported by nearly US$500,000 mobilised for disaster relief and recovery, including a significant grant from the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF).   

When the floods occurred, Lions across the country mobilized, providing affected communities food, necessary supplies, and immediate assistance. Many Lions continued to take part in relief efforts even though they were directly impacted by the floods.   

Supported by a Major Catastrophe Grant from the Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), Lions have since undertaken rebuilding projects covering homes, schools, hospitals and community infrastructure.  

Rebuilding schools, classrooms, restoring homes, supplying hospitals with medical equipment, building sanitation facilities for homes and schools, renovating community buildings and parks, and providing home start-up kits to affected families are among the completed and ongoing projects. 

Lions' rebuilding efforts support the recovery of essential services that communities depend on after a disaster. Restoring housing, education facilities, healthcare access and local infrastructure helps affected areas return to normal functioning faster, while addressing immediate needs within affected communities. 

LCIF has committed to providing additional funding to support ongoing recovery efforts, with a particular emphasis on school infrastructure development.   

The Lions' long-standing commitment to disaster recovery in Sri Lanka includes the Ditwah response. Lions have assisted with relief and rebuilding operations throughout the nation in the wake of significant disasters, such as the 2004 tsunami and other natural emergencies, frequently with assistance from LCIF.    

For Lions, service does not end when the floodwaters recede.
