Sri Lanka Embassy in Doha Felicitates World Champion Javelin Thrower Rumesh Ahead of Wanda Diamond League

The Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the State of Qatar, Sithara Khan, hosted a special felicitation ceremony at the Sri Lankan Embassy in Doha to honour javelin champion Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage ahead of his participation in the Wanda Diamond League at the Qatar Sports Club.

Rumesh arrived in Doha after securing a remarkable victory in the men’s javelin event at the Ostrava Golden Spike Meet in the Czech Republic, where he won the competition with a throw of 86.57 metres. His outstanding performances throughout the season have helped him rise to the current World No. 2 ranking in men’s javelin.

Addressing the gathering, Ambassador Sithara Khan congratulated Rumesh on his achievements and extended her best wishes for his upcoming Diamond League appearance. She also praised his dedication and ambition to win an Olympic medal for Sri Lanka at the 2028 Olympic Games.

Rumesh said the Doha event would provide an opportunity to compete against leading global athletes and expressed confidence in achieving his best performance. He thanked his family, coaches, supporters, and well-wishers for their continuous encouragement, noting that their support has been instrumental in his progress and pursuit of Olympic success.

The ceremony was attended by Rumesh’s father Thushara Premakeerthi Pathirage, coach Tony Prasanna, physiotherapist Chandima Sarathchandra Gurusinghe, representatives of the Sri Lanka Coordinating Committee led by President Duleep Liyanage, members of the Sri Lanka Benevolent Fund, the Sri Lanka Business and Professional Council, and officials of the Sri Lankan Embassy in Doha.

The Embassy extended its wishes to Rumesh for success at the Wanda Diamond League and his continued journey towards bringing international glory to Sri Lanka.
