Sri Lanka’s Geneva Representative Meets UN Rights Chief Volker Türk

Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka, Sumith Dassanayake, had a constructive meeting with the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, Ambassador Volker Türk, at Palais Wilson on 13 April 2026.

During the meeting, Permanent Representative Dassanayake briefed the High Commissioner on recent developments in Sri Lanka and discussed several matters of mutual interest. Ambassador Dassanayake reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s continued and constructive engagement with the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

High Commissioner Türk appreciated Ambassador Dassanayake for the briefing, while expressing continued support for Sri Lanka through OHCHR.

Legal action to be taken on anyone violating ID system

The Police have warned that legal action will be taken against anyone who violates the National Identity Card (NIC) system from Monday (17). Police Spokesman, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ajith Rohana said the NIC system will be strictly enforced from Monday (17) to the 31st of May.
