Sri Lanka In Talks With Russia To Secure Fuel Supplies

Formal government-level discussions have begun to secure fuel supplies from Russia, Cabinet Spokesman Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said.

Speaking at the weekly Cabinet media briefing at the Department of Government Information today (24), the Minister stated that the government is exploring the possibility of obtaining fuel through intergovernmental agreements, with discussions already underway.

He added that the Russian Deputy Energy Minister is expected to visit Sri Lanka soon, during which further talks on fuel supply are likely to take place.

Commenting on a recent statement by the Iranian Ambassador in Colombo offering fuel support, Minister Jayatissa said the gesture is appreciated. However, he noted that countries with access to their own tankers are better positioned to benefit from such opportunities, while Sri Lanka currently lacks that capacity.

The Minister also confirmed that several fuel orders have already been placed. These include bunker fuel and light fuel oil, with tenders opened and another tender scheduled to open today.

Based on the ongoing procurement process, a few fuel shipments are expected to arrive in Sri Lanka in April, as part of the government’s plan to manage fuel supply in the coming weeks.

World’s largest natural corundum blue sapphire found in Sri Lanka
