Veteran Journalist N. Sathiya Moorthy Passes Away

It is with our deepest sympathy that we announce the passing of veteran journalist and former Colombo Gazette columnist N. Sathiya Moorthy, who passed away in India following a brief illness.

Based in Chennai, Sathiya Moorthy was a highly respected journalist known for his in-depth analysis of Sri Lankan politics and Indian affairs. He contributed regularly to several Sri Lankan publications, including Colombo Gazette, where his writing was valued for its clarity, balance, and deep regional insight.

Over the years, Sathiya Moorthy played an important role in shaping public understanding of India–Sri Lanka relations. His expertise also made him a frequent guest on Indian television channels, particularly during discussions related to Sri Lanka and South Asian geopolitics.

Mom put chili powder in child?s eye

A mother has been arrested for abusing her son and putting chili powder in his eyes, the police media unit said. The 22 year old mother was arrested by the Welawaya police after a complaint was received over the 119 police emergency hotline. According to the police, the mother, a resident of Welawaya, had abused her 4 year old son and even hurt his legs. She is to be produced in court later today. Five cops suspended

Five policemen attached to the Mihintale police station have been suspended after two policemen were found to be under the influence of liquor while on duty. The police media unit said that on Monday night four policemen were on duty in a police mobile unit in the Mihintale area. Probe on oil leak impact

The National Water Supply and Drainage Board is investigating the harm the oil leak near Diyagala could have caused to the water supply after the oil got mixed with the Mahaweli River. A board official said that so far there was no immediate danger as the oil leak from a bowser which had toppled nearby had been contained.
