Russia Plans Lunar Power Facility Under Joint Moon Program

Russia is planning to establish a manned lunar program, including a power facility on the moon, over the next decade as part of a joint research initiative with China, according to reports published yesterday (26).

Russia’s state space corporation Roscosmos said the power plant is expected to be built by 2036 under an agreement with the Lavochkin Union Space Company. The facility will support lunar exploration activities, including rovers, observatories, and infrastructure for the proposed International Lunar Research Station.

Although Roscosmos did not confirm whether the plant would be nuclear, the involvement of Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom and the Kurchatov Institute has drawn attention.

The move comes as Russia seeks to regain momentum in space exploration following recent setbacks, including the failed Luna-25 mission in 2023.
