Deputy Minister Discusses Expansion of Sri Lankan Employment in Israel

Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Employment, Arun Hemachandra, who is currently on an official visit to Israel, held the first Joint Technical Evaluation and Progress Review Coordination Committee meeting with officials of the Israeli Population and Immigration Authority (PIBA) on 22 December 2025. The discussions focused on employment opportunities for Sri Lankan workers in Israel.

The meeting reviewed progress and identified issues across six existing employment sectors: home-based caregiving services, agriculture, construction, hotels, housekeeping and cleaning services, manufacturing, and restaurant-related employment. Future strategies to address these challenges were also discussed.

In addition, the Deputy Minister held talks on securing new employment opportunities for Sri Lankans and explored ways to expand the number of positions available in Israel in the coming years.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed to facilitate recruitment of Sri Lankan workers in the service sector. On behalf of Sri Lanka, the agreement was signed by Koshala Wickramasinghe, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment, while Israel was represented by Moshe Nakash, Deputy Director General of PIBA and Head of the Foreign Workers Administration.

The meeting and signing ceremony were attended by senior officials from both countries, including Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Israel Nimal Bandara, Additional General Manager A.K.U. Rohana, and other representatives from the Bureau of Foreign Employment.

Dog set on fire, turtle eaten

The police have arrested eleven people over cruelty to animals at two separate locations yesterday. A woman was arrested in Galle for pouring kerosene oil on a dog and setting the dog on fire.
