Japan to Provide US$2.5 Million in Emergency Aid for Sri Lanka Cyclone Relief

The Government of Japan will provide US$2.5 million in emergency aid to Sri Lanka to support humanitarian relief following Cyclone Ditwah, Japanese officials said Tuesday.

The assistance, delivered through the IOM, WFP, and UNICEF, will address urgent needs including food, shelter, water, sanitation, and child protection. Japan will allocate US$1 million to IOM for shelters and non-food items, US$1 million to WFP for food aid, and US$500,000 to UNICEF for hygiene and child-focused support.

Further relief will be coordinated via the Japan Platform (JPF), while a JICA survey team begins assessments for future recovery and reconstruction. Japan reaffirmed its commitment to assisting Sri Lanka, describing it as a longtime friend and pledging continued support.

Cyclone Ditwah struck on Nov. 27 after weeks of severe monsoon rains, leaving 643 dead, 183 missing, and 1.62 million people affected as of Dec. 16.
