‘Rebuilding Sri Lanka’ Fund Tops Rs. 3.4 Billion Following Cyclone Ditwah

The Government’s ‘Rebuilding Sri Lanka’ Fund, established to support communities affected by disasters caused by Cyclone Ditwah, has received more than Rs. 3.42 billion to date, Secretary to the Ministry of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, Dr. Harshana Suriyapperuma, said.

He noted that the fund has attracted contributions from local business leaders, Sri Lankans living overseas, and foreign institutions. The total amount received so far stands at approximately Rs. 3.4 billion, equivalent to over USD 11 million.

According to the Finance Secretary, foreign currency contributions account for USD 4.1 million of the total.

Dr. Suriyapperuma also revealed that donations have been received from 40 countries, with the United States emerging as the single largest contributor. Significant contributions have also come from Sri Lankans residing in Australia, as well as from the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, the Maldives, Saudi Arabia, France, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates.

In addition, several Sri Lankan business entities have each donated more than Rs. 100 million, while four further contributions ranging between Rs. 20 million and Rs. 100 million have been made by members of the business community and the general public.
