PM Stresses Child Welfare in Post-Disaster School Reopening

Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya emphasized that education should not become a burden for children during the post-disaster recovery period, highlighting the need to prioritize their psychosocial well-being, according to the PM’s Office.

The Prime Minister made these remarks while addressing education authorities in Nuwara Eliya District, discussing measures to restore school activities and safely reopen schools following the recent disaster.

While the Ministry of Education has scheduled a nationwide school reopening on 16 December, Dr. Amarasuriya noted that provincial and district authorities have the discretion to adjust reopening plans in affected areas. She stressed that schools in high-risk zones should only reopen after obtaining recommendations from the National Building Research Organization (NBRO), with careful attention to infrastructure and access roads.

The Prime Minister also encouraged flexibility for teachers and students who have faced hardships, including allowing comfortable attire.

District education officials reported that, despite challenges, educational reforms are progressing, with 51% of teacher training activities in Nuwara Eliya District already completed.

Dr. Amarasuriya further called for collective efforts to overcome these challenges, aiming to restore and improve the education system beyond pre-disaster levels.

The discussion was attended by Deputy Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr. Madhura Senevirathna, Nuwara Eliya District Coordinating Committee Chairman and MP Manjula Suraweera Arachchi, MPs Kalaichelvi and Anushka Thilakaratne, District Secretary Thushari Tennakoon, and other government officials.
