2025 Nobel Prizes Awarded at Grand Ceremony in Stockholm

The world’s most prestigious academic honours were presented on Wednesday as the 2025 Nobel Prize laureates received their awards at a ceremony held in Stockholm, Sweden. The event, attended by more than 1,000 guests including members of the Swedish royal family and prominent political leaders, marked the annual commemoration of Alfred Nobel’s death on December 10.

This year’s Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to quantum physicists John Clarke, Michel H. Devoret, and John M. Martinis for their groundbreaking discovery of macroscopic quantum mechanical tunnelling and energy quantisation in an electric circuit. Their work has significantly advanced the understanding of quantum phenomena.

In Chemistry, Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson, and Omar M. Yaghi were recognised for the development of metal-organic frameworks, materials now widely used in gas storage, catalysis, and environmental applications.

The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine honoured Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi for pioneering discoveries related to peripheral immune tolerance, research that has shaped modern immunology and opened pathways for new treatments for autoimmune diseases.

Hungarian writer László Krasznahorkai received the Nobel Prize in Literature, highlighting his celebrated contributions to contemporary European literature.

The 2025 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel was awarded to Joel Mokyr, Philippe Aghion, and Peter Howitt, whose work has profoundly influenced economic theory and innovation studies.

Each Nobel Prize this year carries a monetary award of 11 million Swedish kronor, equivalent to approximately 1.21 million U.S. dollars.

The ceremony, steeped in tradition and international admiration, once again celebrated excellence in science, literature, and economics, reflecting Alfred Nobel’s enduring legacy of advancing human knowledge and progress.
