Aragalaya activist attends pro-Ranil demonstration

A leading ‘Aragalaya’ activist attended the pro-Ranil demonstration staged near the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court.

The activist, who had led a faction of the Gota-Go-Home protesters and later the ‘Ranil-Rajapaksa’ protests, was seen near the barricades protesting with the pro-Ranil group on Tuesday.

Some of the demonstrators said that they were not there to support former President Ranil Wickremesinghe but to protest against the undemocratic actions of the current administration.

Several opposition political parties, including the United National Party and the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, attended the protest near the court premises.

Wickremesinghe was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on Friday over allegations he misused Government funds to travel to London to attend a private function.

He was accused of misusing Government funds to travel to London to attend a graduation ceremony of his wife, Professor Maithree Wickremesinghe in 2023 when he was President.

The former President was remanded till Tuesday (26/08) and was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Colombo National Hospital after being transferred from the prison hospital. (Colombo Gazette)
