Canada’s presence in Sri Lanka grounded in durable principles

Canada, in a message to mark Canada Day, says its presence in Sri Lanka is grounded in durable principles.

The High Commissioner for Canada in Sri Lanka and Maldives Eric Walsh said that Canada Day is an opportunity to reflect on the values that shape Canada’s identity – diversity, inclusion, respect for human rights and an enduring commitment to peace and reconciliation.

“It is also a moment to honour the contributions of generations who built our nation and the strength we draw from our history before and since Confederation. When we celebrate Canada’s vibrant mosaic, we are strengthening people-to-people contacts. Our countries are connected through strong linkages such as academic partnerships, development cooperation, and a shared vision for an equitable and sustainable world. I am proud of the partnerships that continue to flourish, from advancing gender equality and adapting to climate change to promoting inclusive economic growth,” he said.

The High Commissioner said that Canada’s presence in Sri Lanka is grounded in durable principles.

“We collaborate not only on a government-to-government basis, but in friendships built by individuals, institutions and communities. Earlier this year, I had the pleasure of facilitating a visit to Sri Lanka and Maldives by Canada’s Indo-Pacific Trade Representative. The visit spoke to the mounting interest of Canadian companies and investors – many of whom have roots in Sri Lanka – to invest in and export to this country,” he said.

He also said that with the launch of Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy in 2022, both countries have been making a concerted effort to strengthen ties with the people of this region and to deepen engagement in support of economic growth and regional security.
