UN rights chief meets families of missing in Sri Lanka

The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk met families of the missing in Sri Lanka and accepted petitions handed over to him.
Türk travelled to Trincomalee and Jaffna where he met the families of those reported missing during the war and also expressed solidarity at an event held for the victims of the alleged Chemmani massacre.
The families of the missing, who spoke to Türk in Trincomalee, urged him to ensure accountability.
A spokesperson for Türk later told reporters that the High Commissioner met civil society and others in Trincomalee and Jaffna and will brief the media at the end of his visit in Colombo on Thursday.
As part of the programme, the High Commissioner was to also travel to Kandy where he will pay respects to The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and call on the Chief Prelates of the Malwatte and Asgiriya Chapters.
Substantive discussions during the visit focused on further advancing the promotion and protection of human rights and reconciliation, in line with the Government of Sri Lanka’s ongoing constructive engagement with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. (Colombo Gazette)
