Ranil’s plan to convert Nuwara Eliya post office building into a hotel scrapped

The Sri Lankan Cabinet has decided to repeal the decision taken by the previous Cabinet headed by then President Ranil Wickremesinghe, to convert the iconic Nuwara Eliya post office building into a hotel.
India’s Taj Hotel group had plans to construct a hotel in Nuwara Eliya around the post office but withdrew following protests by the public.
The former Cabinet had approved a proposal to transfer the Nuwara Eliya Post Office Building to the Urban Development Authority.
However, protests were staged against the move at the time by employees of the Postal Department.
The Cabinet of Ministers led by President Anura Kumara Disanayake has now granted approval to a resolution furnished by the Minister of Health and Mass Media to repeal the decision of the Cabinet of Ministers that has been taken to transfer the Nuwara Eliya Post Office building and its premises to the Urban Development Authority.
Instead, the Cabinet has decided to develop the existing building and the adjoining land to attract more local and foreign tourists and enhance new revenue generation opportunities.
