Two former Ministers, Mahindananda Aluthgamage and Nalin Fernando have been imprisoned for 20 and 25 years respectively after being found guilty of causing Rs. 53 million in losses to the Government.
Former Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage and former Trade Minister and former Sathosa Chairman Nalin Fernando were found guilty over a case related to the purchase of carrom boards and checkers boards for distribution to sports clubs during the 2015 Presidential Election.
The case was filed by the Bribery Commission accusing them of authorizing the purchase of 14,000 Carrom boards and 11,000 checkers boards through state-owned Sathosa, resulting in the Government suffering huge losses.
The Colombo High Court found the two former Ministers guilty and sentenced Aluthgamage to 20 years rigorous imprisonment and Nalin Fernando to 25 years rigorous imprisonment.
