Deputy Prime Minister New Zealand arrives in Sri Lanka

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of New Zealand, Winston Peters, arrived in Sri Lanka on an official visit.

Sri Lanka’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Arun Hemachandra welcomed the New Zealand Deputy Prime Minister at the Bandaranaike International Airport, Katunayake.

Winston Peters is undertaking an official visit to Sri Lanka from 24 to 28 May 2025.

Peters is undertaking the first visit by a New Zealand Foreign Minister to Sri Lanka since 2013.

He will be meeting President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya and Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath.

?New Zealand and Sri Lanka have invested considerably in boosting our bilateral relationship over the past five years, including by opening High Commissions in Colombo and Wellington. This visit will provide political momentum and leadership to that process.?

?New Zealand must work alongside partners to contribute to a stable, secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific,? Peters says.

Suspect who attempted to bribe Dehiwala Crimes OIC arrested

A suspect who attempted to bribe the Officer in Charge (OIC) of the crimes unit of the Dehiwala Police, has been arrested. The Police said that the suspect had offered a Rs. 50,000 bribe to the cop. CID chief transferred hours after Archbishop raised concerns

The Police Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in charge of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Nuwan Wedasinghe has been transferred, hours after the Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith raised concerns over the CID. Police curfew imposed in the Veyangoda area

A Police curfew has been imposed in the Veyangoda Police Division in the Gampaha District with immediate effect. The Government Information Department said that the curfew will be in effect until further notice. A curfew had earlier been declared in the Divulapitiya and Minuwangoda areas in Gampaha after a woman in Divulapitiya tested positive for the coronavirus.
