Opposition politicians allegedly linked to increase in crime in Sri Lanka

Opposition politicians are allegedly linked to an increase in crime reported in Sri Lanka over the past several weeks, Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala said.

The Minister told Parliament that intelligence information had revealed links between criminals and politicians attached to the opposition, including the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna and the Samagi Jana Balawegaya.

He said that these politicians are linked to 10 criminal gangs and investigations into this was ongoing.

The Minister was responding to a question raised in Parliament by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa over the recent increase in shootings in Sri Lanka.

Premadasa said that over 50 murders had been reported over the past 8 months.

He said that some opposition MPs were also facing death threats.
