Sri Lanka pledges USD 1 million in humanitarian assistance to Myanmar

Sri Lanka has pledged USD 1 million in humanitarian assistance to Myanmar which was devastated by an earthquake recently.
The Cabinet has decided to offer financial assistance worth USD 1 million to Myanmar as well as dry rations and medical assistance.
The Government said that dry rations will be collected with the guidance of Buddhist monks to be transported immediately to the Myanmar people with the mediation of the Government.
A group of relief services comprised of medical officers and other members of health staff will also be placed on alert to be deployed to Myanmar when required.
The decision was taken considering the long ? term close relationship between the two nations as two Buddhist states.
Myanmar has been gripped by violence amid a civil war between the junta – which seized power in a 2021 coup – and ethnic militias and resistance forces across the country.
The country’s humanitarian crisis has worsened significantly after last week’s massive earthquake, which has killed more than 2,700 people, by the government’s estimate. The actual death toll is believed to be much higher.
Multiple international aid agencies and foreign governments have dispatched personnel and supplies to quake-hit regions.
