Murder suspect shot dead while in Police custody

A murder suspect was shot dead in Veyangoda while in Police custody today. Police Spokesman, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ajith Rohana said that the suspect was shot dead during an “incident” involving the Police this morning. He said that the suspect, identified as 37-year-old Nishantha Kumarasiri, was injured in the incident and was admitted to hospital. The Police Spokesman said that the suspect succumbed to his injuries in hospital. He also said that a policeman also sustained injuries

Coronavirus death toll in Sri Lanka rises to 191

The coronavirus death toll in Sri Lanka rose to 191 today, the Government Information Department said. The Government said that four more deaths linked to the coronavirus were reported today. Of the four, one was from Pitakotte, one from Ragama, one from Kadawatta and another from Vavuniya. One victim, a 66-year-old man from Pitakotte, was transferred to the Homagama Base Hospital from the Colombo National Hospital after testing positive for the coronavirus. He died while receiving treatment

Monks protest against burial of coronavirus victims

A number of Buddhist monks staged a protest near the Presidential Secretariat today against burying coronavirus victims. A petition in this regard was also handed over to Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi. Buddhist monks attached to several organizations including the Sinhala Ravaya and Sinhale Api participated in the protest. A tense situation arose when the monks attempted to force their way into the Presidential Secretariat.?The Police prevented the monks from entering the premises.
