CID grills Tiran Alles over death of cop in 2023

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) recorded a statement from former Minister of Public Security, Tiran Alles, over the death of a policeman in Weligama, Matara in 2023.

Alles was summoned to appear before the CID on Monday and a statement was recorded over the shooting incident near a popular hotel in Weligama in which the policeman was killed.

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon has already been remand over the incident.

A policeman was killed and another officer sustained injuries during the shooting incident in Weligama in December 2023 when Alles was the Minister of Public Security.

The Police at the time had said that shots were fired between the Police and suspects when the Police conducted a raid.

Examinations chief transferred to assist ongoing probe

Sri Lankans not affected by earthquake in Iran, Iraq

Sri Lankans have not been affected by the deadly earthquake in Iran and Iraq, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said. According to the Foreign Ministry, the Sri Lanka Missions in Tehran and Baghdad have confirmed that no Sri Lankans are reported as affected by the earthquake in Iran-Iraq. “The Missions remain alert and in contact with local authorities,” the Foreign Ministry said.
