Sri Lanka deeply concerned over situation in Gaza

Sri Lanka is deeply concerned over the situation in Gaza and calls on all sides to avoid any action that would lead to further escalation of the situation.
Issuing a brief statement, the Foreign Ministry said that Sri Lanka is hopeful that sustainable peace will be established in the region soon.
Israel’s defence minister has ordered troops to advance deeper into the Gaza Strip, vowing to hold more land until Hamas releases the remaining hostages it holds.
After retaking part of the strategic Netzarim corridor that divides Gaza’s north from south, Israeli troops moved toward the northern town of Beit Lahiya on Thursday, local time, and the southern border city of Rafah.
The military said it had resumed enforcing a blockade on northern Gaza, including Gaza City.
It comes after Israel renewed its air strikes on Gaza this week, shattering the fragile ceasefire agreement which had brought about relative calm and seen two dozen hostages released since late January.
In comments on Friday, Defence Minister Israel Katz said operations would continue “with increasing intensity until the hostages are released by Hamas”.
“The more Hamas continues its refusal to release the kidnapped, the more territory it will lose to Israel,” he said.
Nearly 600 Palestinians have been killed since the truce collapsed on Tuesday.
