Japan to support Sri Lanka?s own human rights initiatives

Japan, on Monday, said it will continue to support Sri Lanka?s own initiatives to improve its human rights.

The Japanese delegation at the ongoing 58th Session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva said that it welcomes the steps taken by the new government of Sri Lanka toward national reconciliation.

Japan said it also welcomes steps taken by Sri Lanka on a domestic mechanism by strengthening its truth and reconciliation framework, and its active engagement to develop infrastructure and livelihoods in the Northern and Eastern provinces.

“We also recognize the efforts of the Government of Sri Lanka to implement social protection measures to compensate for the cumulative impacts of the economic crisis and associated austerity measures that have affected socio-economically vulnerable communities,” Japan said.

Japan said it will continue to support Sri Lanka?s own initiatives to improve its human rights situation in a concrete and tangible manner and to further promote confidence-building measures that contribute to national reconciliation. (Colombo Gazette)
