South Sudan secures Sri Lanka’s support at UNHRC

South Sudan secured Sri Lanka’s support at the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) during the ongoing 58th Session.

Sri Lanka believes that the international community and the Council should support South Sudan?s efforts in consolidating peace and development, based on national priorities.

“Durable and sustainable solutions for the internal issues of South Sudan are in the hands of its people and the government,” Sri Lanka told the Council.

Sri Lanka welcomed the many progressive developments that have taken place in South Sudan in advancing peace and security.

The Sri Lanka delegation at the 58th Session of the UN Human Rights Council also welcomed the legal reform processes in South Sudan initiated towards enhancing the protection of human rights, especially the steps taken to establish transitional justice institutions, including the passing of the bills for the establishment of commission for Truth and Reconciliation and the Healing and the Reparation Authority.

Sri Lanka said that South Sudan is actively cooperating with the Council and its mechanisms under agenda item 10.

In this context, Sri Lanka is of the view that the proliferation of any other initiatives and mechanisms, without the consent of South Sudan, would be both unhelpful and counterproductive. (Colombo Gazette)
