Speaker accused of being operated by remote control

Parliament Speaker Dr.?Jagath?Wickremeratne, has been accused of being operated by remote control by the Government after he bent the rules to accommodate views being expressed by the Leader of the House Bimal Ratnayake.

The Speaker, who had on previous occasions refused to allow any MP to ask a question after a statement was read under Standing Orders 27 (2).

However, the Speaker changed the rules on Saturday after MP Ravi Karunanayake raised a question and allowed Leader of the House Bimal Ratnayake to make a statement.

Ratnayake also later requested the Speaker to give some time to opposition MPs to make brief statements on the fuel issue in the country.

The opposition voiced strong objections accusing the Speaker of being a puppet of the Government and being operated by remote control.

The opposition said that in future they will need to ask the Leader of the House for time to speak and not the Speaker. (Colombo Gazette)

Moody’s downgrades Sri Lanka’s ratings

Moody’s Investors Service (“Moody’s”) today downgraded the Government of Sri Lanka’s long-term foreign currency issuer and senior unsecured ratings to Caa1 from B2 and changed the outlook to stable.
