Sri Lanka was hit by a major power outage across the island, which lasted for several hours before being gradually restored.
The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) said that steps were taken to gradually restore the electricity across the island in stages.
The sudden power cut disrupted daily life in the capital Colombo and other major cities.
The water supply was also affected as a result of the breakdown.
The Ministry of Power and Energy said that an emergency situation at the Panadura grid substation after a monkey fell on to the power lines, had caused the disruption. (Colombo Gazette)
