Former President Mahinda Rajapaksa has sought court intervention to restore his security which was reduced by the current administration.

Lawyers appearing for Rajapaksa filed a Fundamental Rights (FR) petition in court naming Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya and the Cabinet as respondents in the petition.

Rajapaksa accused the Cabinet of reducing his security to 60 personnel without a proper security assessment.

The former President claimed that his life is still under threat and so his security detail must be increased.

At least 116 police officers previously assigned to protect former President Mahinda Rajapaksa had been transferred last year. These officers were reassigned across 38 police divisions, including seven Chief Inspectors of Police and four Inspectors of Police.

Additionally, some security vehicles allocated for Mahinda Rajapaksa?s protection had also been withdrawn. (Colombo Gazette)
