Cabinet approval to be sought to abolish PTA

Cabinet approval is to be sought to abolish the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA), Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara said.

He told Parliament on Wednesday that a Cabinet paper has already been prepared in this regard.

The Minister said that hopefully by the next Parliament session the paper would have been submitted for Cabinet approval.

Nanayakkara said the Government will abolish the PTA and replace it with new laws that meet international standards.

Minister Bimal Ratnayake told Parliament this week that while the policy of the new Government is not to agree to some of the existing ant-terrorism laws, as a Government they need to continue using them carefully until new laws are introduced.

The Minister asserted that as a Government they need to enforce existing laws. (Colombo Gazette)
