Sri Lanka to accept Indian grant for 22 train engines

Sri Lanka has decided to accept a grant from India for 22 train engines, Cabinet spokesman Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa said.
He said that Indian Railways has expressed their consent to provide 20 improved engines of the slightly used M10 locomotive model to the Sri Lanka Railway Department and 02 additional railway engines and spare parts required for the maintenance of those engines as a grant.
An unsolicited proposal to provide the locomotive maintenance service for a period of 5 years has been submitted by RITES, an engineering consultant and infrastructure development company in India.
Approval was granted at the cabinet meeting held on 11-06-2024 to appoint a negotiation consensus committee and a project committee appointed by the Cabinet of Ministers for the appraisal of the said proposal and submission of the recommendations.
The project committee has shown that the necessary expertise for maintenance of the relevant locomotive engines has been with the Sri Lanka Railway Department, and it is appropriate for the relevant work to be carried out by the staff of the department.
Accordingly, the Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal presented by the Minister of Transport, Highways, Port, and Civil Aviation to sign the agreement for the grant of 22 engines and accept the grant. (Colombo Gazette)
