Red alert issued as storm lashes parts of Sri Lanka

A red alert was issued as a storm lashed parts of Sri Lanka resulting in flash floods and earth-slips.

The ongoing 2024 G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination was also suspended as a result of the adverse weather.

A red alert was issued Sri Lanka’s Department of Meteorology said that a deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal was likely to move closer to the east coast of Sri Lanka and intensify further into a cyclonic storm on 27th November.

Under influence of the system cloudy skies will prevailed over most parts of the island, very heavy showers and strong gusty winds can be expected in Northern, North-central, Eastern, North-western and Central provinces.

The Department of Meteorology said that showers or thundershowers will occur at times in most places of the island. Very heavy showers above 200 mm are likely at some places in? Northern, North-central and Eastern provinces and in Puttalam district. (Colombo Gazette)
