Ban on political meetings, musical shows at Galle Face lifted

The Government has decided to lift the ban imposed on holding political meetings, rallies and musical shows at Galle Face Green.

The Government said that maintaining Galle Face Green costs?approximately Rs. 2.5 ? 3.0 million a month.

Cabinet Spokesman Vijitha Herath said that Cabinet approved a proposal to make the administration of Galle Face ground more systematic and transparent under the basis of the concept ?clean and greenery Galle Face Ground.?

In 2023 the Cabinet decided to preserve the Galle Face Green for the public only to spend time leisurely and also gave permission for special religious observances.

The Sri Lanka Port Authority had taken over the development of Galle Face Green under a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) project and a total of Rs. 220 million had been allocated for this purpose.

A total of Rs. 6.6 million was also spent to repair the property damaged during the ?Aragalaya? protest. (Colombo Gazette)
