Hirunika resigns from SJB women’s wing post

Former MP Hirunika Premachandra has resigned from her post as the National Organiser of the women’s wing of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB).

Premachandra said that while she had decided to step down as the National Organiser of the Samagi Vanitha Balawegaya she will contest at the Parliament Elections from the SJB.

The former MP said that she resigned after those close to SJB Leader Sajith Premadasa blamed the party organisers for his defeat at the Presidential Election.

Premachandra said that she was disappointed with that comment as she and several others sacrificed their time to promote Premadasa at the election. (Colombo Gazette)

Another 63 inmates at Welikada infected

Another 63 inmates at the Welikada Prison tested positive for the coronavirus today. Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya told Colombo Gazette that a total of 87 prisoners tested positive today from the entire prison cluster. Cop killed after being run over by tipper truck

A Police Constable has been killed after being run over by a tipper truck in the Haathalawa area in Kobeigane last night. Police spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said the officer was part of a five-member Police team involved in a sting operation to investigate illegal sand mining near the Deduru-Oya.
