More Chinese nationals arrested in Sri Lanka over online scam

More Chinese nationals have been arrested in Sri Lanka over an online financial scam, the Police said.

According to the Police, a group of 20 Chinese nationals were arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID).

The Chinese were arrested from a hotel in Panadura and over 400 mobile phones, over 300 USB cables and several routers and laptops were also seized.

Earlier, the Police arrested 30 Chinese nationals in Hanwella on Sunday and on Monday the Police arrested 19 Chinese in Nawala.

A group of Indians had also been arrested earlier over the same allegations.

The foreigners are believed to have used social media to carry out the crimes. (Colombo Gazette)

Deputy Minister Palitha Thewarapperuma jailed

Deputy Minister Palitha Thewarapperuma was today ordered to be remanded together with four others for breaching a court order. The Mathugama Magistrate ordered that the Deputy Minister be remanded till September 16. He has been accused of burying a body at an unauthorized land, disregarding a court order.
