Sri Lanka votes for change and elects Anura Kumara as President

Sri Lanka has voted for change and elected Anura Kumara Dissanayake as the first Marxist President of the country, results released so far on Sunday showed.

Dissanayake was leading in almost all the Districts except in the Tamil dominated North.

The Presidential candidate of the National People’s Power (NPP) had secured over 51% of the votes based on the results released by Sunday morning

Dissanayake is expected to take oaths as the new President either on Sunday evening or Monday.

Anura Kumara Dissanayake had said on Saturday he expects a smooth transition of power.

During campaigning, Dissanayake promised to crackdown on extremism, if elected President.

Dissanayake said that his Government will not allow hate to be promoted among any group.

The NPP Leader also said that the law will be equal to all and all high-profile cases, including that of the murder of journalist Lasantha Wickrematunge and rugger player Wasim Thajudeen, will be investigated.

Foreign Minister Ali Sabry conceded, Sunday, that incumbent President Ranil Wickremesinghe had lost the 2024 Presidential Election.

Sabry said that after a long and arduous campaign, the results of the election are now clear.

The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) led by Sajith Premadasa has already conceded defeat at the 2024 Presidential Election and congratulated Dissanayake. (Colombo Gazette)

SLPP National List seat on offer for Gotabaya
