Sri Lanka Navy detains 35 Indian fishermen

The Sri Lanka Navy detained 35 Indian fishermen poaching off the Kudiramalei Point in the northwestern seas, south of Mannar.?

The Northwestern Naval Command had spotted a cluster of Indian fishing boats engaging in illegal fishing in Sri Lankan waters on Thursday.

A Coast Guard ship attached to the Western Naval Command was later dispatched to chase away the Indian fishing boats.

The operation resulted in 04 Indian fishing dhows being seized 35 Indian fishermen who continued to remain in Sri Lankan waters being arrested.

The dhows (04) and Indian fishermen (35) were brought to SLNS Vijaya and were handed over to the Kalpitiya Fisheries Inspector for onward legal action.

The Sri Lanka Navy has seized a total of 44 Indian fishing boats and arrested 322 Indian fishermen for poaching in Sri Lankan waters in 2024. (Colombo Gazette)
