Ranil to contest as an independent candidate

President Ranil Wickremesinghe is to contest the upcoming Presidential election as an independent candidate.

President?s Counsel Ronald Perera placed a deposit on behalf of the President at the Election Commission, Friday.

Perera said that Wickremesinghe will be contesting the election as an independent candidate.

The Presidential Election will be held on 21 September, 2024 and nominations will be accepted on 15 August 2024.

A number of Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MPs and others already in his Cabinet will support him at the polls.

Opposition Samagi Jana Balawegaya Leader Sajith Premadasa, National Peoples Power Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayaka and Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka are among those contesting the polls.?(Colombo Gazette)
