PM tells Speaker to act on court order against IGP

Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena requested Speaker Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena to act against the Supreme Court order preventing Deshabandu Tennakoon from functioning as the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

The Prime Minister told Parliament that the order has thrown the country into a crisis ahead of the Presidential election.

Gunawardena said the Speaker has the right to intervene and overturn the court order.

An interim order was issued preventing Deshabandu Tennakoon from functioning as the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

The interim order was issued by the Supreme Court based on nine petitions filed by several parties including the head of the Catholic Church in Colombo, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith.

The petitioners had challenged the decision by President Ranil Wickremesinghe to appoint Tennakoon as the IGP.??(Colombo Gazette)

US destroyer involved in 2017 deadly accident arrives in Sri Lanka

USS Fitzgerald (DDG-62), an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer in the US Navy, which in 2017 was involved in a deadly accident killing 7 sailors, arrived in Trincomalee today.
