Veteran politician Vikramabahu Karunaratne passed away

Veteran politician Vikramabahu Karunaratne passed away at the age of 81.

Karunaratne was a candidate in the 2010 presidential elections in Sri Lanka.

Karunaratne joined the Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP) in 1962 whilst an undergraduate at the University of Ceylon. He was elected to the LSSP’s Central Committee in 1972 but fell out with the party’s leadership over their support for the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and the 1972 Republican Constitution. He was expelled from the LSSP.

In 1977 Karunaratne joined with other former members of the LSSP, including Vasudeva Nanayakkara, to form the Nava Sama Samaja Party, a breakaway party of the LSSP.

In 1978, he was arrested in Kandy for attempting to put up protest slogans against then-incumbent President J. R. Jayewardene prior to his visit to Kandy.

Karunaratne was seen as a strong supporter of Tamil rights in Sri Lanka. (Colombo Gazette)

Passenger arrested with wallapatta hidden in his baggage

A?Sri Lankan passenger was arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport today with?wallapatta?hidden in his baggage. The 38 year old man was arrested at the departure lounge with?32 kgs of wallapatta chips, valued at Rs. 9,600,000.00, concealed in his baggage. The police Financial Crimes Investigations Division (FCID) is investigating?financial irregularities alleged to have taken place at CSN when Weliwita was the chairman.
