Ranil to contest as an independent candidate

President Ranil Wickremesinghe is to contest the upcoming Presidential elections as an independent candidate.

United National Party (UNP) General Secretary Palitha Range Bandara said that by contesting as an independent candidate, anyone can join and support Wickremesinghe at the election.

He said the Election Commission has also been requested to hold the Presidential election at the earliest possible date.

Range Bandara said that once the Election Commission announces the date of the election Wickremesinghe will formally announce that he is contesting.

The President had recently invited the Samagi Jana Balawegaya and the National People’s Power to support him at the election. (Colombo Gazette)
