Real estate player Mangal Prabhat Lodha (and family) was Mumbai’s biggest wealth gainer in percentage terms (116%). In the global rich list, Indian billionaires have seen a slight drop in world ranking; Mukesh Ambani maintains his stronghold at 10th position with a substantial increase in wealth. Gautam Adani’s remarkable surge in wealth propelled him up eight positions globally to the 15th rank.

HCL’s Shiv Nadar and his family witnessed a notable ascent in both wealth and global ranking (up 16 places to 34). Conversely, Serum Institute’s Cyrus S Poonawalla experienced a modest dip (down 9 places to 55) with total wealth of $82 billion. Further contributing to India’s billionaire cohort’s dynamics are Sun Pharmaceuticals Dilip Shanghvi (61st position) and Kumar Mangalam Birla (100). The report also highlights gender disparities, indicating that India has fewer self-made women billionaires compared to China. While 7% of all billionaires in India are women, the figure stands at 22% in China. This underscores the need for greater opportunities and support for women entrepreneurs in India.

Additionally, the report emphasizes that 57% of billionaires in India are self-made, with industries such as pharmaceuticals, automobiles, and chemicals contributing significantly to their wealth. However, despite the growing number of billionaires, India grapples with widening income inequality and socio-economic challenges.

Experts emphasize the importance of inclusive growth, infrastructure development, and creating an enabling environment for entrepreneurship.
