President to announce Government policy on 7th February

President Ranil Wickremesinghe is to announce the policy of the Government moving forward, when Parliament convenes on 7th February.

The Ceremonial opening of the Fifth Session of the Ninth Parliament will be held on 7^th February under the patronage of the President Ranil Wickramasinghe.

Accordingly, the President is scheduled to preside over Parliament and present the Statement of Government Policy at 10.30 am on that day.

It was decided at the Party Leaders’ meeting held today (01) to hold the Adjournment debate with regard to the Statement of Government Policy on February 8^th and 9^th, which is to be presented to the Parliament by the President, Mrs. Kushani Rohanadeera, Secretary General of the Parliament, said.

Sri Lanka bans Tamil diaspora groups and several individuals

Some of the groups were banned in 2014 but were de-listed by the Government in 2015. The Global Tamil Forum (GTF), British Tamil Forum (BTF), Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC), Australian Tamil Congress (ATC), National Council of Canadian Tamil, Tamil Youth Organisation and the World Tamil Coordinating Committee have been proscribed by the Ministry of Defence.

Jaffna schools closed as Covid spreads rapidly

All schools in Jaffna have been temporarily closed as the coronavirus is spreading rapidly is some areas in the District. Officials said that schools in the Jaffna Education Zone will be closed for one week from tomorrow (Monday).
