Kusal Mendis apologizes for comment on Virat Kohli

Sri Lanka cricket captain Kusal Mendis apologized for a comment he made on Virat Kohli following the latter’s record hundred against South Africa in the 2023 Cricket World Cup.

During the World Cup a journalist had asked Mendis if he would like to congratulate Kohli on his record hundred.

Mendis responded asking why he would want to congratulate Kohli and the response went viral on social media.

Speaking to reporters in Colombo today, Mendis apologized for his response saying he was not aware at the time that Kohli had scored a record hundred.

Mendis said that he had gone for the press conference in India to respond to questions on his team’s performance against Bangladesh.

He said he was not aware about Kohli’s hundred at that time and regrets his response to the question at the time.

During the World Cup, Virat Kohli matched Sachin Tendulkar’s world record of centuries in ODI cricket after he scored his 49th hundred against South Africa at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata. (Colombo Gazette)
