Government threatens to scrap monopoly given to SriLankan

The Government has threatened to scrap the monopoly given to SriLankan Airlines for flights operating between Colombo and some international destinations.

Minister of Ports and Aviation Nimal Siripala de Silva told Parliament that he had a discussion with international airline operators and requested them to expand operations between Colombo and global destinations.

He said that he offered airlines to operate direct flights to destinations from Colombo earlier granted only to SriLankan Airlines.

The Minister said the offer was made to ensure tourism was not affected by the crisis at SriLankan Airlines.

The Minister also said that a glo-slow campiagn launched by SriLankan Airlines trade unions had been suspended.

The go-slow campaign had resulted in a number of delays of SriLankan Airlines flights.

Nimal Siripala de Silva also said that the restructuring process of SriLankan Airlines was continuing. (Colombo Gazette)

Government tables changes to 20th Amendment

The Government today tabled changes to the draft 20th Amendment to the Constitution. The changes were tabled when a two day debate on the 20th Amendment to the Constitution began in Parliament today. Justice Minister Ali Sabry tabled the changes after opening the debate today. He said that during the committee stage of the debate the Government will be prepared to consider further changes. Health Minister accused of deceiving public on community spread

Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi has been accused of deceiving the public on a community spread. Parliament was told today that the coronavirus was spreading in Kuliyapitiya. Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa said that the virus was spreading fast in several areas. He said that there was a community spread around Kuliyapitiya yet the Health Minister is refusing to accept there is a community spread.
