Macron hails French relations with Sri Lanka during historic visit

French President Emmanuel Macron hailed the relations between France and Sri Lanka during his brief but historic visit to the country yesterday (Friday).

Macron become the first French President to undertake a visit to Sri Lanka.

The French President had talks with President Ranil Wickremesinghe at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) focusing on a wide range of issues.

He later tweeted saying Sri Lanka and France share the same goal for an open, inclusive and prosperous Indo-Pacific.

He said that both leaders confirmed the strengthening of 75 years of diplomatic relations and looked forward to open a new era in their partnership.

The French President was accompanied by French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Catherine Colonna and a high?level delegation comprising senior officials of the French Government.?(Colombo Gazette)

Coronavirus death toll in Sri Lanka rises to 191

The coronavirus death toll in Sri Lanka rose to 191 today, the Government Information Department said. The Government said that four more deaths linked to the coronavirus were reported today. Of the four, one was from Pitakotte, one from Ragama, one from Kadawatta and another from Vavuniya. One victim, a 66-year-old man from Pitakotte, was transferred to the Homagama Base Hospital from the Colombo National Hospital after testing positive for the coronavirus. The public have refused to respect the quarantine law in some isolated areas, the Police said today. Police Spokesman, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Ajith Rohana said that there have been reports of the public refusing to respect the quarantine law in newly isolated areas. “When asked to undergo a PCR test some people have refused while there are others who have refused to respect the travel restrictions imposed on isolated areas,” he said.
